Pentatonic scales are the root of all blues music. There are two versions — major and minor. I talk about them here on this page.

When should you use each?

Here’s Robben Ford in a Q & A answering that very question. It comes down to developing a harmonic feel that your scales create. Those blues notes—minor thirds and fifths and all the passing notes that give the blues that emotion—need to be included to be, well the blues.

And don’t forget about bends that actually transcend any one treatment of major or minor scales.

Blues notes are blues notes for a reason. It’s because they give the music the emotion we love about the blues.
